Artists in Residence – Platform

The Artists-in-Residence platform of the Bayreuth Festival of Young Artists embodies a central tenet of the festival: not only to facilitate international artistic encounters on an ad hoc basis, but also to accompany and support young artists in their development over the years and to integrate them into the festival in a sustainable manner.

The festival sees itself as a space for cultural exchange, artistic training, and shared growth. Young musicians from diverse backgrounds not only collaborate on specific projects in Bayreuth but also develop long-term artistic networks, new concert formats, and intercultural perspectives. Many former participants return as established artists after their initial festival experiences and play a key role in shaping the festival’s profile today.

The projects by Martin Schneider and Radoslava Vorgić serve as examples of two artists who have been able to develop artistically and build international renown over many years within the framework of the festival. Their current productions combine high artistic quality with innovative outreach approaches and enrich the festival program in a special way.

With “Flora Incognita,” the Yara Ensemble, in collaboration with recorder player and artistic director Martin Schneider, is developing a concert project dedicated to the symbolic, sonic, and cultural-historical significance of plants and nature in Baroque music. The project combines historical performance practice with a contemporary perspective on the perception of nature and sustainability, creating a poetic space of resonance between music, the environment, and cultural memory.

The program centers on works by Georg Philipp Telemann, George Frideric Handel, James Oswald, Francesco Rognoni, and Arcangelo Corelli. These works draw on images of nature, the seasons, floral motifs, and pastoral soundscapes, illustrating the close connection between music, the observation of nature, and human emotion. The musical meditations on plants by Hildegard von Bingen are also incorporated into the program.

Special emphasis is placed on the historical figure of Telemann, who was deeply engaged with garden art and botany and created a place of artistic and spiritual inspiration in his private garden just outside Hamburg. Drawing on this historical context, a dramaturgically rich concert format emerges that conceives of nature not merely as a motif, but as a resonant space for human experience.

The project combines musical excellence with an engaging presentation, creating a thoughtful introduction to early music for a broad audience. As a long-standing artist of the festival, Martin Schneider also exemplifies the sustained development work of the Artists-in-Residence platform at the Festival of Young Artists Bayreuth.

With “A Journey Through the Emotional World of Early Music,” soprano Radoslava Vorgić, together with Spanish lutenist Rafael Arjona Ruz, has developed an intimate concert format that blends Baroque soundscapes with Southeast European musical traditions. The focus is on the emotional expressiveness of early music and its impact on audiences, which remains as immediate today as ever.

The program, structured with dramatic intent, combines works from the European Baroque with sonic influences from various cultural traditions, thereby creating a space for intercultural resonance between historical performance practice and contemporary musical perception. The unique combination of soprano and lute creates an extraordinary sense of sonic intimacy and transparency, allowing the emotional depth of the works to be experienced directly.

Complementary educational programs are planned, including introductions to historical performance practice, discussion sessions on the role of the lute in European music history, and workshops for children and teenagers where early music and historical instruments can be explored in a playful way.
